I wrote all over this book - underlining and starring everything. I didn’t want to put it down. Someone else gets it! Tears were shed. I love this book and I’m buying it for everyone I know so they can better understand what we are living.
This book, this brutiful story is a read for those in the trenches; the parents and caretakers who are working so hard to figure things out, the extended family members, friends and neighbors who want to walk a mile in their loved one's shoes and the educators who are determined to understand the why behind how people function.
Author, Gina Schlicksup, shares her journey the only way she knows how; raw, unfiltered and with the goal of connecting people.
Order Exceptionally Unordinary and find a comfy spot to read because you won't want to put it down. (Grab a pen and notebook to jot down helpful tips.)
Exceptionally Unordinary:
A Mom's Mission to Turn an Unordinary Life into Her Purpose
When Gina Schlicksup took a job as an early childhood special education teacher out of college, she had no idea how her life would come full circle. Her teaching experience and familiarity with special education law and processes became an integral part of her personal journey raising and advocating for her exceptional children. Though she left the classroom years ago, she never truly left the special education field. Now, the classroom is her home and the students are her children.
Tourette Syndrome was never on Gina’s radar, but when her youngest son, William, developed tics at age four, her family’s life forever changed. Exceptionally Unordinary chronicles Gina’s journey as a mother who has spent years navigating the world of food allergies, Tourette Syndrome, ADHD, OCD, anxiety, sensory integration disorder, and learning disabilities. She has written a candid account of the challenges she and her husband, Anthony, experienced finding medical professionals familiar with Tourette Syndrome and comorbid conditions, obtaining an appropriate education, and the impact it had on their entire family.
Gina’s experience raising misunderstood children opened her eyes to the need for a voice in the special education community. A voice to advocate for children with hidden disabilities and educate parents and education professionals about these disorders. She hopes her family’s story will be a catalyst for change and an opportunity to encourage, educate, and empower parents and educators of exceptional children.
